Peer-education on topic “Combating Trafficking in persons” in 12 selected primary schools.
(September 2009 - May 2011).

PROJECT TITLE

Peer-education on topic “Combating Trafficking in persons” in 12 selected primary schools.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM AND RATIONALE FOR THE PROJECT

B&H is still in transition to effective democracy. Civil society remains weak, particularly in engaging with government authorities, and authorities are often suspicious of citizens’ groups. B&H’s geographical location between eastern and western Europe, combined with inadequate border controls, has made it a significant human trafficking route.
Traffickers use a variety of methods to recruit their victims, including advertisements in newspapers and direct contact with victims through networks of recruiters.
Bearing in mind that employment rate in BiH and living standard of its citizens is very low, it is easy to recognize the danger for young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina to become victims of trafficking in persons while looking for better life opportunities.
Therefore, it is necessary to organize and conduct various educational activities, particularly among endangered and easily manipulated groups, such as young adolescents.

PROJECT DECSRIPTION

The aim of the action is to organize and facilitate:

  • 96 workshops on topic “Combating Trafficking in persons” for 150 children / future peer-educators
  • 36 workshops for 48 schoolteachers and
  • 12 theatre plays in 12 primary schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Project will be implemented from October 1st 2009 till May 31st 2011 (project will be in abeyance during the months of June, July and August 2010 – school summer break).

The Project will be implemented in the following 12 primary schools:

  1. "Vojislav Ilić", Krupa na Vrbasu
  2. "Novak Pivačević", Stara Dubrava
  3. "Mladen Stojanović", Jošavka
  4. "Sveti Sava", Kotor Varoš
  5. "Petar Petrović Njegoš", Maslovare
  6. "Petar Kočić", Šiprage
  7. "Petar Kočić", Imljani
  8. "Petar Kočić", Kola
  9. "Mladen Stojanović", Bronzani Majdan
  10. "Miloš Dujić", Čelinac
  11. "Stanko Rakita", Vrbanja
  12. "Dositej Obradović", Kneževo

Genesis Project will form one team (2 persons in the team) that will work in the 12 selected primary schools.

In each school, we will form 1 group of 12-14 children (12 primary schools = 150 children in total) who will be attending our peer-education workshops. Each workshop will last 45 minutes and will be organized before or after regular school classes. On this way we will not disturb children’s regular school activities. Schools will be visited by our field team once a week and that means that each group of children will attend one workshop per week.

In each school, we will form 1 group of 4 schoolteachers (12 primary schools = 48 schoolteachers in total) who will be attending our Teachers Core Group workshops. Each workshop will last 45 minutes and will be organized before or after regular school classes. On this way we will not disturb regular school activities. Schools will be visited by our field team once a week and that means that each group of schoolteachers will attend one workshop per week.

Project target groups are children (younger adolescents) aged 13 to 14 years (VIII grade) and schoolteachers, who will be enrolled in workshops and directly benefiting from this project.

Within this project the goal of Genesis Project is to work simultaneously on two levels: with pupils and schoolteachers. The goal of activities with all target groups is to initiate, develop and support long-term “local community/school based” action toward problem of human trafficking, primarily through empowerment of schoolteachers and peer-educators. Through these planned activities, we aim to “remove” the firm border line between schoolteachers and pupils and to show that pupils can be teachers as well.

It is our aim to empower pupils/children and their schoolteachers to organize and facilitate different educational activities on the topic “Combating Trafficking in Persons” with the goal of permanent education of new generations about this life important issue.

EXPECTED RESULTS: VERIFIABLE PROJECT OUTCOME AND OUTPUTS

Project outcome:
Increased capacities of children to avoid becoming victims of TiP

This outcome will be achieved through provision of information and knowledge to primary school senior students participating in project activities in order to raise their awareness on the TiP existence, modes of TiP, ways of recruitment, state and entity institutions who are dealing with this issue, children rights and other youth-threatening issues. The information and expertise will be provided through peer-education workshops, educational classes held by trained peer-educators, performance of the theatre play and educative brochure, both created in child appropriate manner at one side, and provision of theoretical knowledge through active interaction with workshop participants, on the other side.

Responding Indicator:
Sample of 50 participating pupils tested at the start and at the end of project show increased knowledge and awareness on trafficking in persons.

Project outputs are:

  • Increased level of knowledge and awareness, amongst children – peer educators, about topic “Combating trafficking in persons”.
  • Changes in attitudes and behavior toward topic “Combating trafficking in persons” amongst children – peer educators.
  • Selected children (peer-educators) equipped with “peer-education” skills and gender equality knowledge that will allow them to facilitate transfer of knowledge on topic “Combating trafficking in persons” to their peers.
  • Selected schoolteachers equipped with knowledge and skills that would enable them to support good quality, independent and sustainable education on topic “Combating trafficking in persons” in primary schools.
  • 96 workshops organized and held with 150 peer-educators,
  • 36 workshops organized and held with 48 schoolteachers,
  • 12 theater plays organized and held with app. 800 pupils,
  • 50 children tested/evaluated (pre-testing and post-testing activities). Results of internal evaluation, conducted among 50 children – peer educators, will show changes in level of knowledge, attitudes and behavior.
