Genesis Project and UNICEF BiH cooperation on the project:
«Welcome Hygia»

Implementation of project Activity 1.
Puppet theatre performance called “Welcome Hygia” (live, interactive and educational puppet show), focusing on importance of hygiene and dangers from avian influenza.

In total we have:

  • targeted 8115 children,
  • established close cooperation with 4 Associations of Roma people and performed puppet shows for their youngest members,
  • conducted 100 puppet shows.

Implementation of project Activity 2.
Organization and realization of pre-testing and post-testing activities for children

Introduction:
Children from following primary schools participated in the pre and post-testing:

  • Primary school "Milan Rakić", village Karanovac, Banjaluka municipality (49 children).
  • Primary school "Stanko Rakita", village Vrbanja, Banjaluka municipality (63 children).
  • Primary school "Sveti Sava", Kotor Varoš municipality (88 children).

Since project target groups are children age from 5 to 11 years, we developed simple questioner which was composed from following questions:

  • When we should wash our hands?
  • Who can get ill from avian influenza?
  • What is avian influenza?
  • Should we, before the use, wash eggs?
  • What are viruses?
  • Should children, while washing hands, sing one specific song which will help them to wash hand carefully and long enough?
  • About what Hygia takes care?

It was planned that educational, live, puppet show “Welcome Hygia” send serial of simple, easy understandable messages that will leave permanent influence on development and formation of consciousness about necessity to maintain personal hygiene as main precondition to prevent spread of infectious diseases. It was also planed that puppet show teaches pupils and schoolteachers about importance of personal hygiene for prevention of avian and pandemic influenza and about ways of spreading these diseases.

Organization and realization of pre-testing activities for children
During month September, Genesis Project employee – professor of psychology and pedagogy developed questioner for children that was used for testing of children – project direct beneficiaries. This questioner was distributed among 210 children who were asked to answer on 7 questions. Through pre-testing we measured level of children knowledge about hygiene and avian influenza before they have seen the puppet show.
Organization and realization of post-testing activities for children
During second week of October children have participated in post-testing. Approximately 15 to 20 days after children have participated in pre-testing they watched our educational puppet show “Welcome Hygia”. Than we waited up to 10 days and we asked schoolteachers to give same questioner to children who have seen the puppet show to answer the same questions again. Comparing the results from pre and post-testing helped us to find out what changes in level of knowledge happened thanks to our puppet show.
Here is the detail breakdown of evaluation findings:

  • It was planed that children gain knowledge about importance of regular hand washing before and after every meal.

During pre-testing 87 pupils (43.50%) gave correct answer and knew that hands should be washed before and after every meal. After children have seen the puppet show, during post-testing activity, on same question 194 pupils (97%) gave correct answer.
